BOOKS

Slender Reeds
Jochebed's Hope
by Texie Susan Gregory

This past week I had the pleasure of discovering a new-to-me author. I agreed to read/review Slender Reeds for Barbour Publishing.
Everyone knows the story of Moses. This story elaborates on the events before he was born....with his mother and what his people had to endure. This was a good story and I am going to give the book away to one commenter from this post.....see giveaway section below for details.

Faith and Hope

I've read the story of Moses many times. Slender Reeds really brings it to life. It's a story of trust and faith during a time of terrible heartbreak.
I applaud Texie Susan Gregory for her ability to put a face on the secondary characters of this Biblical story.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

Trapped beneath 400 years of Egypt’s injustices, the Hebrew people await deliverance from generations of Egyptian slavery. But while it is still dark, God is at work. Young Jochebed is unaware the Master Weaver is preparing her to mother three formidable leaders: Miriam, Aaron, and Moses. Shiphrah, the half-Egyptian midwife tasked to kill Hebrew male newborns, remembers childhood stories of a merciful God and cannot resist His call on her life.
Two women, each following the dangerous path God has set before them—this is their story.

Born and bred in beautiful North Carolina, I grew up hearing the Bible stories and wishing I knew more about each person's life. What happened before? What happened next? Unable to find these stories, I began to write my own books and dream of writing professionally.

True story: As a 6th grader, I turned in a book report on my own book - written under a nom de plume!

I hold a BS in Early Childhood Education, an MA in School Counseling and an MA in Religious Education. I've worked in theatre, as a hospital chaplain intern and as a teacher in both public and private schools.
As a pastor's wife, I've served as a lay counselor, written/directed dramas for worship services and co-taught marriage seminars.
My most challenging and rewarding life work has been (is) mothering our two children.

MOVIES & TV

The Butler and I love the original MacGyver series and we were excited to here about this remake. Despite what some people say...including the original actor Richard Dean Anderson...this is a really good show. The original series was exciting and fun and this remake is simply an updated version. It's a younger Mac and a much tougher Jack Dalton (I love this character). I am hoping that Richard Dean Anderson has a change of heart, because I would love to see him do a special appearance on the show. It's on Friday nights, 8pm (PT) on CBS.

BOOKS

Keep Holding On
by Melissa Tagg

I loved visiting the Walker family again.....

A Great Series

I truly love Melissa Tagg's Walker Family series. She does a great job describing not only the characters, but she brings to life the town of Maple Valley. In Keep Holding On, I enjoyed revisiting this town and its citizens. Just like the other books before it, I loved the interaction between the main characters.....witty and exciting. If you love small town stories with heart, you will truly enjoy the Walker Family series. I'm looking forward to more wonderful books written by Melissa.

(From Amazon):

Beckett Walker hasn't stepped foot in Maple Valley in years. There's no getting past the painful memories, and there's every chance he'll be arrested as soon as he shows his face. Which is exactly what happens when he finally returns. Suddenly his dream of adventure as a military lawyer comes skidding to a halt.

Horticulturist Kit Danby has spent too much time missing home and her childhood best friend--Beckett Walker. Now she might have a shot at reclaiming both. After years of living abroad, she returns to run her family's apple orchard. She has one season to turn a profit and impress the father she barely knows. But she can't do it alone.

It should be simple: Beckett needs community service hours. Kit needs a helping hand. But there's more at stake than either of them planned. With a tangled past and futures that look nothing alike, they'll have to find a way to weather the storms of the present . . . or risk losing everything.

MOVIES & TV

The Butler and I enjoy watching Court TV shows. My favorite one is The People's Court. I loved it when Judge Wapner presided over the show, but I find Judge Marilyn Milian quite entertaining as well. I can't believe some of the cases that have come up...some are downright ridiculous. On the other hand, I've learned a lot about the law from this show and others like it.
Premise of the show:
A judge hears small-claims cases in this series that served as a template for several similar courtroom series. The litigants in the case agree to drop their lawsuits and have the case heard on the show. Since the show is not a real courtroom, the decision is simply binding arbitration the litigants agree to abide by.

SHIP'S GALLEY

           Halloween Candy Bark

The setup is simple: Bittersweet chocolate is melted and topped with bite size pieces of all your favorite Halloween candies. But perhaps the real highlight of this creepy confection is the beady eyeballs that stare back at you...which can be found at your local grocery store.

INGREDIENTS:

3 Cups Bittersweet Chocolate Chips           2 Cups Assorted Candy, cut into bite size pieces

DIRECTIONS:

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring until smooth.
Pour the chocolate onto the parchment paper, and using a spatula, spread it into an even layer about 1/4-inch thick. Sprinkle the chopped candy on top of the chocolate then place the baking sheet in the refrigerator to chill for 30 to 45 minutes until the chocolate has fully hardened.
Remove the bark from the refrigerator and carefully slide it onto a cutting board. Cut the bark into irregularly shaped pieces. Serve immediately or store in an air-tight container in a cool place.
