BOOKS

This past week, I spied a great book that I want to share about and give away. I read and reviewed this book for Barbour Publishing and it truly touched me. A Different Beautiful will bless you and help you to understand what this family (and many other families)have gone through, dealing with their child's special needs. Please read on to find out about this book and the author.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

When Courtney Westlake’s family was given the shocking news that their daughter, Brenna, was born in 2011 with a severe, life-threatening skin disorder, they began to discover a new and different beautiful in their lives–one that values extraordinary differences and appreciates the wonderful sameness found in humanity. In A Different Beautiful, Courtney explores what her family has discovered in raising a child with physical differences and what she has learned about true beauty. Through her personal insights and experiences, Courtney shares how you, too, can learn to find and celebrate God’s version of beautiful in your life, especially within our differences and struggles.

My Review:

Simply Beautiful

The cover of this book caused me to want to read and review it for Barbour Publishing. The sweet photo of this mother and child simply touched my heart. This book tells the story of a family that was truly blessed by God through this beautiful child. As I was reading, I was so impressed by this woman, her struggles and her faith. Even though we all wish and pray for healthy children, sometimes God deems us worthy enough to raise special-needs children. Whether or not you see it as a blessing is up to you....which in turn determines your future and the future of your child. This family chose to accept this beautiful blessing and have been blessed time and time again. I encourage all parents to read this book, whether you have been blessed with healthy children or have been blessed with these beautiful special-needs children. It will fill your heart with love, joy and hope.

Courtney Westlake is a writer and photographer with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a passion for storytelling. Courtney is wife to Evan and mother to Connor and Brenna. Her writing has been published on sites such as Good Housekeeping, the Huffington Post, Woman's Day and Yahoo Parenting. Courtney is the author of A Different Beautiful, releasing August 1, 2016.

MOVIES & TV

This past week, the Butler and I watched another wonderful classic movie....Goodbye Charlie, starring Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds.
This is a fun movie and you can't go wrong with this cast. I highly recommend this movie. Here is a little about it and a link to find out more:

  • Shot by a jealous husband (Walter Matthau), Charlie falls out a porthole and is lost at sea only to find himself returned as an attractive blond woman. His best friend is staying at his house as he puts Charlie's affairs in order and after being convinced, finds himself an unwilling helper in Charlie's new plan to marry into money.

NEWS WORTH SHARING

Not really sure it's worth sharing, but it is certainly popular right now. Have you played this yet? I have not and will not play it, mainly because I am not into Pokemon at all and never have been. That being said, my kids love it, so of course I hear a lot about it.
Even though it seems to be an enjoyable game to play, it concerns me because of the accidents, thefts and assaults happening because of it. If you do play this, I beg of you to be very careful while you play....be aware of your surroundings.

BOOKS

This past week, Chappy spied a great book written by nine authors. This is a wonderful collection of stories. I must admit that I wanted to read it because my favorite author, MaryLu Tyndall, had a story in it. And even though I hadn't heard of most of the other authors, collectionS like this are a great way to get a taste of new-to-me authors, without having to buy full length novels yet.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Join brave women who take on wars, social injustices, and westward expansion, living to find love and build a legacy in these nine stories of historical romance. From Virginia west to Oregon, meet Lucy, a nurse; Helen, a bookkeeper; Permelia, a farmer; Birdie, a seamstress; Francie, a writer; Collette, a widow; Christiana, a midwife; Glorie, a nurse; and Josephine, a maid, who each have their ordinary lives disrupted by mysteries and challenge—and extraordinary love.

I AM GIVING AWAY A KINDLE COPY OF THIS BOOK TO ONE COMMENTER....BUT IF YE CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT, YE CAN FIND IT HERE.

MEET THE AUTHORS:

Award winning and best-selling author, MaryLu Tyndall dreamt of pirates and sea-faring adventures during her childhood days on Florida's Coast. After obtaining a degree in Math and working as software engineer for 15 years, she decided to test the waters as a writer. With now more than seventeen books published, she makes no excuses for the deeply spiritual themes embedded within her romantic adventures. As a follower of Christ, her stories often reflect her own journey and walk with God. Her hope is that readers will not only be entertained but will be brought closer to the Creator who loves them beyond measure. In a culture that accepts the occult, wizards, zombies, and vampires without batting an eye, MaryLu hopes to show the awesome present and powerful acts of God in a dying world. MaryLu makes her home with her husband, six children, two grandkids, and three cats on the California coast, where her imagination still surges with the sea.

THERE ARE SOME VERY AFFORDABLE PRICES ON MARYLU'S BOOKS RIGHT NOW. HEAD OVER AND CHECK THEM ALL OUT....HERE.

Jennifer Rogers Spinola's first book, "Southern Fried Sushi," was a 2011 Christy Award finalist. She has published several more full-length novels and novellas, both contemporary and historical, and co-authored a non-fiction book about God's work in the storms of life.

Jenny, after growing up on collard greens and sweet tea, spent nearly ten years overseas--eight years in Brazil and two in Japan--and her Brazilian husband and kiddos never know what's going to be on the table for dinner. (Black beans and rice? Miso shiro? Fried bananas, or fried squid, or fried pork rinds?)

And given her love for Southern food, in life and in writing, there's almost certainly something fried lurking in there somewhere.

Colleen L. Reece was born and raised near the small, western Washington logging town of Darrington. Her mother taught her to read by kerosene lamplight in a home without running water or electricity--but rich in love of God and family. There she dreamed of someday writing a book. God has multiplied Colleen's "someday" book into 150+ "Books You Can Trust," 6,000,000 copies sold. Feeling called into full-time writing in 1978, she has won many awards. Her greatest reward is seeing several of those she mentored make their mark in the writing field. Colleen thanks God daily for giving her the courage to "dream big," as her parents taught her, and for the opportunities He has given to make those dreams reality.

This past week, the Butler and I spied the movie Bye Bye Birdie, starring my all-time favorite actor Dick Van Dyke. This movie is so much fun to watch, with a very young Ann-Margret dancing and singing her little heart out. I highly recommend this movie to all.

A rock singer travels to a small Ohio town to make his "farewell" television performance and kiss his biggest fan before he is drafted.

SHIP'S GALLEY

This week I'd like to share a recipe and the history behind it. I found it on the Stitches Thru Time blog and got permission to share it here:

GRANDMOTHER HORTON'S GINGER CAKES

An English cake sometimes was really more of a biscuit. Biscuit has its origins from the Latin "bis coctus" meaning twice baked, and perhaps were introduced in Great Britain by the Romans. Small and flat, they were portable. And by the time the English were immigrating to the New World in the 17th century, they were a mainstay in their provisions.

17th century Long Island found the Dutch inhabiting the west end with the colony of New Amsterdam, while the English inhabited the east end. The American present-day term "cookie" comes from koekje, the name the Dutch used for their little biscuits. A wonderful resource for the history of food can be found here:Foodtimeline.org

The English biscuits could be savory or sweet. The little sweet cakes, or tea cakes, might be flavored with ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, or anise seed. My Grandmother Horton baked little ginger cookies and every year we could be sure we would receive a box at Christmastime. The recipe has been handed down through at least four generations now. As I wrote The Southold Chronicles series, the crisp little ginger cakes became a favorite for my characters.

Here's the recipe from my Grandmother Horton. They are small and crisp, and melt in your mouth! If you prefer a chewier cookie, or cake as the Hortons in To Follow Her Heart call them, make the ball of dough slightly larger and experiment with the baking time.

GRANDMOTHER HORTON'S GINGER CAKES

Combine 2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon cloves, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, 2 level teaspoons baking soda in small bowl. In large bowl, stir together 1 cup sugar, 3/4 cup oil, 1 egg, 4 tablespoons molasses. Stir in flour mixture. Roll 1 rounded teaspoonful of dough into a ball - should be 1 inch diameter. Dip in sugar. Place on greased baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
